Have the All Clear to Yell “Clear”: Defibrillator Training

You’ve seen it on TV, and now you want to learn how to use one. Defibrillators are an important medical device and are surprisingly easy to use. They have to be, as they are so useful. In fact, there are defibrillators all over the place out in public in case of emergencies. Here’s what you need to know about using defibrillators and being trained.

What is a Defibrillator?
Technically known as an automated external defibrillator, or AED, these devices are placed on a person’s chest, where they monitor heart rates. If the rate is irregular or slow and requires a shock, the defibrillator will automatically know and advise its user on the next course of action.

This means that with very little training a person can effectively use an AED, as the machine will actually talk to the rescuer want to do and how to respond.

More Than Just Technology
However, even though an AED is easy to use and will often tell you what to do, you still need to be trained. The operator must be able to recognize cardiac arrest and know basic CPR, among other things. Even if you feel confident in how to use an AED, it is important to receive training and repeat it every few years (if you are not using an AED regularly) so that you feel comfortable under pressure. Any defibrillator situations will require you to make important snap judgments that will affect someone’s life. You need to know how to work the model you are using in your sleep, and you need to know which situations are potentially harmful or even deadly.

Getting Certified
Learning how to use a defibrillator is easy. Simply look up a course online; often these are offered […]

Why Does Your Practice Need Continuous Training?

Medical technology is constantly changing. Patients want non-invasive procedures more and more, and the equipment and techniques medical professionals use are evolving to meet those needs. Granted, the tools are also more precise and detail oriented to provide better procedures than in decades past.
For Doctors
What does this mean for you? As a surgeon or doctor, you’ve likely been highly trained on the available equipment while you were in medical school or completing your residency. But new technology becomes available every day. Med Ed Labs wants to help you have the best training possible on the most current equipment.

Are considering a new device to incorporate into your practice? Check whether you can give it a try first to make the most informed decision. Perhaps you’ve already purchased a new piece of equipment but it’s not used very often at your clinic. Use one of the training facilities from Med Ed Labs to get some practice before your next applicable patient.
For Staff
Your medical practice is likely comprised of staff with varying levels of training. Perhaps you’ve employed physician assistants and nurses at your private practice. Maybe your hospital staff includes emergency medical technicians. Or your clinical lab possibly utilizes radiation technicians who specialize in MRI and CAT-scans.

All of these professionals can benefit from additional training. Bring them all up to speed on current and brand new equipment. Your practice or facility will surely benefit from having a top-notch staff.
For Patients
Okay, okay! Patients won’t be coming into a Med Ed Lab to train on medical equipment. But as a medical professional, they’re your primary focus. Why not become the best provider you can be? With the best continuous training, you’ll have the healthiest patients with the smoothest […]

How Can You Become an Ultrasound Technician?

If you want to go into the medical field but don’t nursing or medical school is the right way for you, you should consider becoming an ultrasound technician. Although most commonly associated with seeing babies before they are born, ultrasounds can and are used throughout the medical field in a variety of ways. They are right at the forefront of expectant joy and of serious diagnoses.

What Exactly Does an Ultrasound Technician Do?
An ultrasound technician is kind of like the scout that goes ahead before the main army. Their job mostly involves observation, but it is very important for the success of the following team of doctors. They not only capture images using sound waves, but they select and even evaluate the best images. They take measurements and make calculations, all to help give the doctor the information he or she needs to make the right diagnosis and treatment plan as quickly as possible.

This important range of activities means that any sonographer must be thoroughly trained in multiple areas. They must know how to use and care for the ultrasound equipment. They must have a thorough knowledge of anatomy, terminology, how to care for and interact with patients, and even common medical problems that are associated with conditions that may require an ultrasound. As they are often the only ones in the room with, for example, an expectant young couple, the ultrasound technician will be the first one in line for questioning.

What Formal Training Is Necessary?
Because of the wide range of skills required, almost all hospitals or clinics will only hire those who have undergone serious training and certification. There are many different degree and certification programs available throughout the country. Most of these are […]

Decreasing Death Rates in the Operating Room

Among the members of the surgical team, the surgeon bears the greatest responsibility and accountability for the lives of the patients. This is why being a surgeon requires extensive knowledge and impeccable skill in order to perform a procedure with precision. Any wrong move of a tool can possibly cause major damage, and in worst case scenarios, even death.

Lessen deaths in the OR

Surgical death can be inevitable at times, especially when circumstances go beyond your skill and control. However, with proper medical and surgical training, and the latest, high-quality equipment and facilities to work in, a surgeon’s abilities can be honed to make them utterly proficient. After all, “practice makes perfect.” And in the operating theater, there isn’t any room for anything less than perfect.

Non-Technical Skills Matter, Too

The surgeon’s skills in the operating room are very important for a surgery to be successful. A surgeon is expected to possess dexterity and precision in every procedure he or she works on. Because people are so focused on the surgeon’s technical skills, their non-technical capabilities are often disregarded.

The Importance of Social and Cognitive Skills

Being lifesavers on their own, the surgical team is expected to possess an overall package of skills and characteristics. Cognitive and social skills are important for them to acquire. Aside from the physical hazards that may occur to the patient in the operating room, the patient could also be in danger if the surgical team does not work in a harmonious fashion. A successful surgery does not only depend on the technical skills of each member of the team, but also on how easily they blend, communicate, and make decisions with each other.

The Important Role of a Surgeon

The surgeon, being the captain of the ship, is expected to show imperceptible skills and modern approaches to complete an intended operation. However, such technical skills are not enough to ensure the safety of the patient and the success of the surgery. Surgical errors do not only happen because of a surgeon’s incompetence, but also because of a lack of non-technical skills. Although each member of the surgical team is trained in their own fields, it is important for the surgeon and the rest of the group to work cohesively as a team.

Meet the Surgical Team

A surgery does not only become successful because of the exceptional skills of the surgeon. A surgical team comprises of different medical personnel and each of them has something to contribute to the entire success of the surgery. Each member of the team should be knowledgeable of the roles that they play and must execute the task confidently and accurately to get the job done.

The Captains of the Ship — the Surgeons

They bear the greatest responsibility during surgery. They are the ones who ensure that the operation proceeds smoothly, safely, and without complications. Surgeons give direct orders to their assistants as well as to nursing personnel. They also work hand-in-hand with anesthesiologists to closely monitor the patient’s condition during surgery.

Monitoring the Patient’s Condition

Anesthesiologists, on the other hand, are in charge of maintaining the patient’s heart rate, level of consciousness, respiration, blood pressure, and anesthesia during surgery. They meet with the patient before the procedure to discuss any medication preferences and any history of allergies. Before the patients are brought to the operating room, anesthesiologists are responsible for providing them with medication to control their anxiety.

The Need for Assistance

Nurses are present in the operating room as well. One nurse acts as a scrub nurse and is in charge of instruments during surgery. The other becomes the circulating nurse who retrieves supplies needed by the surgeon on the spot. Medical students can also take part in the operation to perform simple tasks and observe the process.

Choosing a Medical Device Training Facility

Medical device training is essential for practicing medical professionals to help them get a glimpse of what happens in the real life setting. It is a training ground for medically-inclined occupations as the void between theories and actual skills is filled. However, there is a need for every trainee to choose a facility that can effectively accommodate his educational needs. Not only that, a good medical training center must meet the necessary regulations and validations to ensure the safety of its practitioners.

Medical Device Regulations

Regulations for medical device training are necessary to protect the user from the risk that could be associated with the manufacturing, design, and packaging of the medical devices available in the facility. When choosing the right medical device training center for you, it is best to choose one that meets standard regulations, which include:

Medical Device Regulatory Compliance
Medical Device Quality Systems: On complying with global regulations
Safety Assessment for Combination Products and Medical Devices
Root Cause Investigation for CAPA
Combination Product Development: For safety, registration, and approval

Medical Device Validations

As a requirement of Good Manufacturing Practices, medical device validation benefits soon-to-be surgeons as quality outcomes are ensured after the utilization of the facility and its devices.

Find the Right Surgical Training Facility

The medical and surgical practice is a wide, extensive field that needs comprehensive education and training. It is important for physicians and surgeons to equip themselves well before venturing into the field and dealing with actual lives. Because of this, finding the right, high-quality surgical training facility is essential to the life of a budding surgeon.
The Benefits of Medical Device Training
One thing that a surgical training laboratory should provide is medical device training. Since there is no stopping technology at advancing in a fast pace, a surgeon should practice his craft in an environment that is equipped with the most modern medical equipment. Furthermore, a medical training facility must provide trainings using the most valuable techniques available in the field. Of course, this is because hands-on experience with the latest medical devices is nothing without a strong background about the theories and practices associated with them.
Enhancing Skills by Working on Cadavers
Performing a surgical operation requires precise and accurate skills to make the treatment a success. What is more advantageous when it comes to surgical training than working on a human cadaver specimen? Dummies and computer projections would only provide little good in enhancing the skills of future surgeons. A good surgical training facility knows that working on cadavers can provide medical professionals and staff better training and education when it comes to surgery. More importantly, the facility should give credit and appreciation to the selfless act of the donor who would help make excellent and highly-skilled medical professionals in the future.

How Cadaver Services Help Budding Surgeons

Medical training in the surgical setting can become more effective with the use of a human cadaver. Nothing ever compares to training done on a real human body. Although many medical institutions have already prohibited the use of cadavers, their exceptional use in the extensive training of potential surgeons and physicians cannot be denied.

Why use cadavers in medical training?

There is indeed no shortage of people who are currently volunteering to donate their bodies to the medical field. This minimal processing time provides access to human specimens that are still fresh and could still be useful to medical training.

Cadavers are safe to use since they are flushed with an effective disinfecting solution and chilled at 2 degrees Celsius to be stored between uses. This ensures that a fresh specimen can still be utilized daily for up to several weeks.

A variety of procedures, even the most advanced, can be tested on fresh cadavers, including the insertion of chest drains, thoracotomies, and trauma laparotomies. Specialized equipment, such as endoscopic towers and microscopes, can also be used on these cadavers to enhance the accessibility of lab training even with the most complex operative skills.

The use of national cadaver services is exceptional in the improvement of patient care. Research in the anatomy lab can also be made to seek advancements in the field of surgery. To know more about how you can avail of our national cadaver services, call us today at (888) 533-6968 and we would gladly be of assistance to you!

Importance of Medical Device Training

Individuals who are currently in the medical field will have to undergo medical device training at some point in their practice. Medicine is a practice that should be done in complete accuracy since it deals with the actual lives of people. A single error in the administration of a procedure could lead to a lot of possibilities – and worse, to more serious complications. This is exactly why medical device training exists.

Why is medical device training essential?

Apart from the curricular theories taught in med schools, medical device training enhances the abilities of medical practitioners when it comes to practical procedures that adhere to validation processes and medical device regulations. Medical device training is also essential to make sure that the device’s specifications and manufacturing processes have met approved design characteristics.

Medical device training not only benefits medical professionals by providing them a place to practice and learn more, but it also benefits generations and generations of patients by providing them with competent doctors who could induce better healing.
